Nyerere (Selous) National Park Tour & Safari Packages

The Selous Game Reserve is a huge wilderness and safari destination in Southern Tanzania. This reserve has been called Africa’s last Eden because of the diverse ecosystem with teeming wildlife and vegetation in the park.

  • Game viewing and game driving.

This is a great place to go if one enjoys wildlife and photographing these animals. Game drives activities like game viewing and photograph safaris gives an exceptional experience with a rich collection of wildlife that is abundant and diverse. Good numbers of Big Cats such as Lion, Leopard, Cheetah are to be found here along with other large Game animals such as Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Eland, Zebra, Wildebeest and other wildlife.  This park is also one of few parks left in Africa with a sizable and prolific wild African Hunting Dog population, now endangered in most of Africa.

  • Walking safari

One can also enjoy walking in the park, which one of the most popular activities. One can do this by taking a guide. The best way to see the animals is on foot, as one will have a better view and will be able to get as close as possible to them. Walking safaris are fun and exciting because one can spend more time with the guide tracking the animals and listening to their stories.

  • Fishing in the jungle

Many people visit the park because it is one of the best places where they can go fishing in Tanzania. With the various rivers running through the park, one can get on a boat and enjoy all the attractions this great park has while fishing. The most exciting of these has to be the River Boat Safari on parts of the Rufiji River, exploring channels, lagoons and swamps. There are many fish species in the lake, like regal mackerel and striped bass.

 

  • Photographic safaris

This is a great place to go if you are looking for some activities where the photography skills will take center stage. One can go on a photographic safari, which allows one to enjoy excellent game viewing and photography while also getting great photo opportunities. Photographing wildlife is rewarding and exciting due to the parks diverse ecosystem.

  • Bird watching

With over 440 species recorded, Nyerere NP is an excellent birding destination. The most conspicuous birdlife is attracted to the sandbanks, lagoons, islands and channels along the Rufiji River. A good way to enjoy the birdlife is on a boat safari. Common birds include yellow-billed storks, kingfishers, lapwings and colorful bee-eaters. Fish eagle and palm-nut vulture can be found perched high in the trees and skimmers can sometimes be seen flying across the water

Where it is located

The reserve is located in Southern Tanzania and can be reached from Arusha and Dodoma by road. There are also airports for both Dodoma and Zanzibar, but the most popular airport for traveling to Selous is the Julius Nyerere International Airport in DaresSalaam.

Where can one stay

Hotel accommodation is available in the park, which can be booked through tour operators. Lodges are usually quite spacious because of the exquisite design and private space that each of them provides; they are also well-equipped with all modern facilities for comfort and convenience. One can also camp in reserve, one of the most popular activities in Tanzania.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the reserve is between September and May when there are fewer visitors and most animals are here. During this time of the year, one will be able to see amazing animals as they graze on the grasslands. One can also do various activities like game viewing/driving, boat safaris, fishing, and photograph safaris.
