Wildlife

Curieuse Island is home to more than 500 giant tortoises. It is the only island where you can see these animals roaming freely. The tortoises are different from those in captivity in Mauritius. You should also not confuse them with the Galapagos tortoises. The giant tortoises in Seychelles can be as heavy as 550 pounds. They live longer than other turtles found on earth. Their lifespan is 150 years. The Marine Park Authority monitors and protects these animals. But they roam freely and you can easily see them. Even a day trip to Curieuse Island from Praslin can allow you to see these animals. Nesting sea turtles also visit the island. They are common during the nesting period. They return to the island to lay eggs on the beaches.

Scenery

Curieuse Island has granite rocks, palm trees, and white beaches. These features give it a dreamlike landscape. Its bare red earth together with Coco de Mer palms creates a scenic view. As a result, the island has become a perfect place for taking amazing photos. The island is not just popular for its giant tortoises. Just like Praslin Island, it has the Coco de Mer fruit. This beautiful fruit is popular for its striking resemblance to the female reproductive organ.

The island is home to the mangrove swamp that borders Baie Laraie. You will see about 6 species of mangroves. You can access the habitat via a boardwalk built through the swamp. Also, the coral reef life on the island creates stunning scenery.

Climate

Curieuse Island experiences an equatorial climate. So, climate does not vary as much. Its weather is good for a year-round safari.  Temperatures range between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius. Heavy rains are common between December to March. But showers are short and sunshine can be reported. Temperatures range between 27 and 28 degrees Celsius. The dry season is between April to November. Temperatures range between 30 and 31 degrees Celsius.
